What is Medical Payments (MedPay) Coverage?
Many people have no idea what medical payments coverage (commonly referred to as MedPay), is and whether they have it as part of their car insurance coverage. MedPay is an additional optional coverage you can purchase to protect yourself financially in case of injury in a car, truck, or motorcycle crash. If you have MedPay, your insurance company will reimburse you for your medical expenses up to the amount of MedPay coverage you have. Most medical care and treatment and prescription drugs related to the crash are likely eligible for reimbursement under MedPay. For example, let’s say you were injured in a car crash and have $10,000 in medical bills from the emergency room and physical therapy. If you have $5,000 in MedPay coverage on your car insurance policy, your carrier will reimburse you $5,000 for the medical bills you submit to them. This is true even if you receive a payment for your injuries from the insurance company of the person who caused the crash. You can still submit your medical bills for reimbursement through your MedPay coverage if you have it.
Should I get MedPay Coverage?
The short answer is: Yes. It is not very expensive and it can help you get compensation for your bills. Importantly, MedPay does not depend on who is at fault for the crash. So, if you cause a crash and are injured, you can still collect on your MedPay.
What do I do if I get in a crash?
The first thing you should do is contact an experienced personal injury lawyer. We can help you go through your policy to see if you have MedPay. If you do, we will help you get reimbursed under that portion of your coverage. We can then also look at the other parts of your policy, including rental car coverage and underinsured or uninsured coverage.
